About Superheroes

Superman, Batman, Spiderman - who doesn’t know the superheros?! Superheroes are fictional characters from comic books who usually have superhuman abilities and sometimes use high-tech weapons to protect humanity and fight evil. Superheroes are particularly brave and noble. They are constantly fighting some villain, fending off monsters or saving the world from natural disasters. They often risk their lives for others. Many superheroes have an origin story that explains how they got their superhuman powers and why they fight for good. Some superheroes are threatened by particular weaknesses, for example Superman’s powers weaken when he’s exposed to kryptonite. The idea of superheroes is nothing new. Even in ancient times there were myths of heroes with superhuman powers, such as Hercules, Perseus, etc. and in the Bible you find the story of Samson.

In the US, the first superheroes appeared in the 1930s. The alien from planet Krypton, Superman, was one of the first of these superheroes. Later, strong and confident female characters like Supergirl, Batwoman, etc. came along. Before that, women in comics were primarily portrayed as the ‘weaker sex’ and were saved by male superheroes. Most superheroes keep their true identity a secret by dressing up in costumes. These costumes help them to avoid being recognized by the public. They often have a recognizable symbol, a kind of logo. For example, Batman wears the silhouette of a flying bat. Usually, these symbols are worn on the superheroes’ chest. To emphasize their athletic bodies, their clothes are very form-fitting and they mainly wear tights.
